We'll re-open after the holidays on Thursday, December 27th for our regular hours.  A Merry, Merry Christmas to all, and to all, lots of great reading!

Cookies, cookies, cookies!

The annual library/4H cookie contest was great fun!  Really, when you combine Christmas and cookies (two of my very favorite things), how can it not be a success?

We're hosting Sleepytime Storytime again tonight at the Calhoun Falls Library at 7 pm and Thursday at the Abbeville Library at 7 pm.

Moving!!!

You've been watching as the building progresses in Abbeville, and now, it's time!  We start our move to the new building on Wednesday (Sept. 12) and we'll be moving for two weeks.

The Abbeville Library will be closed from Sept 12 through Sept 30 to allow us to move to our beautiful new location.  We hope to re-open at the new building at 1407 N Main Street on Monday, October 1st.

What can you do to help us move?  We thought you'd never ask :-)

This week ( from now through Tuesday, Sept 11), come by the Abbeville Library and check out a STACK of books, movies, music, and magazines (toys and puppets, too!).  Each card can check out up to 25 items.

This stack will keep you going through the two weeks that we're closed.  And every book that's out in the community being read is a book we don't have to move on moving day!

So come by, get yourself a fun stack at the old building, and return it to the new!  Nothing will be due until Oct. 15, so you'll have plenty of time to return it to our new location after we open.

And remember, the Donalds and Calhoun Falls libraries will be open for most of the time that the Abbeville Library will be closed.  You can visit either (or both!) of those locations to check out materials and use the computers while Abbeville is closed.

Thanks for all your support!  Can't wait to see you at the NEW Abbeville Library :-)

It's that back-to-school feeling.  New books.  New pencils.  New backpacks.

What were your favorite things to read in school?  Did you ever get in trouble for reading under your desk (when, you know, you were supposed to be looking at the blackboard)?  I sure did.  That's how librarians are made :-)

Have a great school year, everyone!

Storm damage at the Abbeville Library

The Abbeville Library suffered some severe storm damage Thursday evening.  As many of you know, we have suffered from leaks (and lost books due to damage) at numerous times through the past few years.  Thursday's storm, however, was like nothing we'd dealt with before.

Though we did lose numerous items (some juvenile non-fiction and some of our novels for teens), we are well on our way to getting the building dry and ready to reopen.

We hope to reopen for regular business on Tuesday, August 14.  Of course, we'll waive any overdue fines you may have accumulated during our closure.

Hope to see you soon in the almost-dry library --

And remember, only a few more months until we're in a building with no leaky roof!! :-)

The new Abbeville Library -- in Legos

Tyler Rauton, one of our young patrons at the Abbeville Library, put his lego skills to work and created his version of our new building.  It has a circulation desk, stacks for the books, a computer area, and yes, even restrooms.  Too cool!  (The life-size building will be done and we'll be in by Christmas.  Can't wait!)

This year's theme for National Library Week was "You belong @ your library." Here's what people had to say in Abbeville County about why THEY belong at their libraries:

"I love books, the smell of books and love the entire concept and organization of the library."

"My family and I really enjoy checking out books and movies. We come at least once a week."

"Not only is there a vast number of movies and books, but the most interesting people are found at the local library. Some of these people are not only the patrons but the librarians themselves as well."

"My children love to come to the library and check out books to read. We also occassionally check out a movie to have a movie night together. We love the Donalds Library!"

"I love to read and love to get on the internet! The library is a great resource for my kids!"

"I feel at home. I love being able to come in everyday on my way home from work. They are the best people and I do consider the library family."

and the most basic reason of all: "I love to read!"

Whatever your reasons, we're glad you belong @ your library!!
