Public Library Appreciation Day

January 31, 2008 was named Public Library Appreciation Day by a concurrent resolution of the South Carolina House and Senate.

This resolution recognized South Carolina's public libraries for playing a vital role in fostering literacy and for utilizing new and emerging technologies to provide access to information.

The resolution pointed out that more than 19.8 million people visited SC public libraries in fiscal year 2006; that 21.5 million books and other materials were borrowed, and that 637,440 children attended a program at a public library that year.

The resolution also pointed out that, according to a recent USC study, every dollar invested in SC public libraries results in a return investment of $4.48.

Library supporters from throughout the state were on hand to visit with legislators and discuss funding for libraries.
