Scholarship Winner Announced

Brittany Rhodes, Calhoun Falls High School's 2008 valedictorian, is the winner of the first Friends of the Library scholarship. The scholarship will help defray costs as Brittany heads to Clemson University next fall.

Brittany has been both a volunteer and an active patron at the Calhoun Falls Library. Recently, she coordinated a special storytime, sponsored by the FFA. The Friends of the Abbeville County Libraries present their senior scholarship program to recognize an Abbeville County student in whose life the library plays an enriching role.

Congratulations, Brittany!

The value of a good book

I just loved the Letter from the Editor in this month's Bookmarks magazine:

"We live in the era of $4 cups of coffee and $7 gourmet chocolate bars. . . . The beauty of reading is that no one has figured out a way to make it more expensive. Sure, collectors will have their way with limited runs and first editions, but reading is such a pure experience that there is no way to make it fancy. What else does a reader need for her or his hobby except a well-lighted place to sit?

In fact, it's one of the few hobbies that doesn't require a lot of expensive stuff to go along with it. If you love to cook, you buy not only the food but thousands of dollars worth of equipment and utensils. Are you into woodworking? Same thing: you purchase the wood and tool after tool. The accessories readers might choose to buy are quite modest: a nice bookmark, a reading light. Really all you need are books, and you can borrow those for free from the library."

To read the rest of the letter, and to see lots of great reviews for new books, check out this month's Bookmarks magazine -- available (free!) at your local library --
