The Abbeville Library has copies of The Panther (the Abbeville High School yearbook) from 1950 to 2011, as well as of The Wildcat (the Wright Middle School yearbook) from 1987 to 2010.

The Donalds Library has copies of the Dixie High School yearbook from 1981 to 1996 and of the Erskine College yearbook from 1939 to 2010.

Calhoun Falls Library has copies of the Flashes yearbook from 1946 to 2006.

Ok, here it is! The totally subjective, "these are some great books I've read recently" list:

How I Killed Pluto and Why it had it Coming by CalTech professor Mike Brown -- The story behind the 'death of pluto' as a planet, and a whole new appreciation for astronomy, written for those of us who are NOT CalTech professors!

Room by Emma Donoghue -- What happens when a little boy, raised in one room all his life, enters the wide world to help his mother escape their captor. A super well-written, on the edge of your seat read!

The Forgotten Garden, The House at Riverton, and The Distant Hours, all by Kate Morton -- I stop strangers, literally, to hand them these fabulous books. Luckily, I'm a librarian, so this isn't quite as wierd as it would be if I worked elsewhere!

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer -- Other people have told you this is a great book, but you are understandably put off by the wierd title and cutesy cover. Ignore both of these, and start reading. It really is that good!

The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua -- if you are a mother, had a mother, know a mother, or were in any way raised by a mother, you will find this fascinating. The story of a mother trying to raise her children in a traditional Chinese way amid American culture and expectations. Interesting, readable, and certain to make you re-examine your own childhood.

"While our economy seems to be slowly staggering back to its feet, state and municipal governments remain hard-hit as the result of lost tax revenues, lost stimulus money and pension fund payments that have grown to monstrous size to make up for the market losses of 2007 and 2008. Those governments are cutting everywhere they can and public libraries nationwide have been one of the biggest and least deserved losers in the process.

Widespread public access to knowledge, like public education, is one of the pillars of our democracy, a guarantee that we can maintain a well-informed citizenry.

But libraries seem to be losing out in the funding battles, due, in part, to the mistaken belief that they are somehow anachronistic in an age when so many Americans have instant computer access to information through the Internet. This is, frankly, a let-them-eat-cake-attitude that threatens to destroy a network of public assets that remains critical in our country.

Millions of Americans simply cannot afford to replace what libraries have traditionally offered for free -- access to books, computers and research assistance. Ironically, the importance of these services is even greater in a time of economic uncertainty.

For Americans facing job losses, working to gain new skills and seeking assistance in an increasingly digital world, U.S. public libraries are first responders. Two-thirds of libraries report they provide the only free access to computers and the Internet in their communities. Libraries function as crucial technology hubs, not merely for free Web access, but those who need computer training and assistance. Library business centers help support entrepreneurship and retraining

For thousands and thousands of American kids, libraries are the only safe place they can find to study, a haven free from the dangers of street or the numbing temptations of television. As schools cutback services, the library looms even more important to countless children. And libraries often offer young parents the only chance they can provide to inculcate their children in a culture of books, one of the most essential building blocks for success in school.

For the elderly, libraries are often important community centers that help them escape the loneliness of old age.

Most important of all, perhaps, a library within a community stands as a testimonial to its values, its belief in universal access to literature and knowledge.

The value of all of these services has been widely accepted in our nation for at least a century. But we have now entered an era of unprecedented budget cuts.

For example, in California, Governor Brown's new proposed budget decreases General Fund assistance for public libraries by $30.4 million, eliminating the California Library Services Act, Public Library Foundation and the California Library Literacy and English Acquisition Services -- that is, access, resource sharing and adult literacy. In Texas, the cuts are even more stark, with the new budget proposing complete elimination of several programs that have either provided direct aid to libraries or irreplaceable programs, like those that created shared databases. Even in my own community, a small city on the northern edge of Chicago where a major university sits, my neighbors and I have been struggling to save a small branch library that was pivotal to the education of many neighborhood kids.

Librarians know that shrinking budgets demand hard choices, and they do not expect to be exempt as local and state governments endure the hardest times they have faced since the Depression. But it is wrong to cut library budgets disproportionately compared to other reductions, and that is what is happening around the country.

I count myself as one of millions of Americans whose life simply would not be the same without the libraries that supported my learning. We cannot take that opportunity away from so many Americans who need that help urgently now.

A few weeks ago, as I was pulling out of the parking lot on
my way to lunch, I observed a car stopped beside our book
return box. The car had stopped so that the child in the
back seat could lean out of her window and drop her library
books in. She was leaning way out to reach the box and
dropping her many books- one at a time- into the book
return. Before putting in her very last book, she hugged it
tightly to her chest and then kissed it twice. She then moved
to drop it in the box but pulled back and kissed it twice
more before finally dropping it in. I didn’t ask her, but I
think it is safe to say that she loves her public library.

This is an excerpt from a recent speech by Philip Pullman, bestselling author of The Golden Compass.

Leave the libraries alone. You don’t understand their value.

"I still remember the first library ticket I ever had. It must have been about 1957. My mother took me to the public library just off Battersea Park Road and enrolled me. I was thrilled. All those books, and I was allowed to borrow whichever I wanted! And I remember some of the first books I borrowed and fell in love with: the Moomin books by Tove Jansson; a French novel for children called A Hundred Million Francs; why did I like that? Why did I read it over and over again, and borrow it many times? I don’t know. But what a gift to give a child, this chance to discover that you can love a book and the characters in it, you can become their friend and share their adventures in your own imagination.

And the secrecy of it! The blessed privacy! No-one else can get in the way, no-one else can invade it, no-one else even knows what’s going on in that wonderful space that opens up between the reader and the book. That open democratic space full of thrills, full of excitement and fear, full of astonishment, where your own emotions and ideas are given back to you clarified, magnified, purified, valued. You’re a citizen of that great democratic space that opens up between you and the book. And the body that gave it to you is the public library. Can I possibly convey the magnitude of that gift?

Somewhere in Blackbird Leys, somewhere in Berinsfield, somewhere in Botley, somewhere in Benson or in Bampton, to name only the communities beginning with B whose libraries are going to be abolished, somewhere in each of them there is a child right now, there are children, just like me at that age in Battersea, children who only need to make that discovery to learn that they too are citizens of the republic of reading. Only the public library can give them that gift. . . .

Then I came to Oxford as an undergraduate, and all the riches of the Bodleian Library, one of the greatest libraries in the world, were open to me – theoretically. In practice I didn’t dare go in. I was intimidated by all that grandeur. I didn’t learn the ropes of the Bodleian till much later, when I was grown up. The library I used as a student was the old public library, round the back of this very building. If there’s anyone as old as I am here, you might remember it. One day I saw a book by someone I’d never heard of, Frances Yates, called Giordano Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition. I read it enthralled and amazed.It changed my life, or at least the intellectual direction in which I was going. It certainly changed the novel, my first, that I was tinkering with instead of studying for my final exams. Again, a life-changing discover, only possible because there was a big room with a lot of books and I was allowed to range wherever I liked and borrow any of them.

One final memory, this time from just a couple of years ago: I was trying to find out where all the rivers and streams ran in Oxford, for a book I’m writing called The Book of Dust. I went to the Central Library and there, with the help of a clever member of staff, I managed to find some old maps that showed me exactly what I wanted to know, and I photocopied them, and now they are pinned to my wall where I can see exactly what I want to know.

The public library, again. Yes, I’m writing a book . . . and yes, I hope it’ll make some money. But I’m not praising the public library service for money. I love the public library service for what it did for me as a child and as a student and as an adult. I love it because its presence in a town or a city reminds us that there are things above profit, things that profit knows nothing about, things that have the power to baffle the greedy ghost of market fundamentalism, things that stand for civic decency and public respect for imagination and knowledge and the value of simple delight."

Many folks use the library to pick up their tax forms each year at our libraries. Though we WILL be getting forms this year, as always, there is a delay in their arrival. Please see this information from the IRS:

"On December 17, the President signed the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010. The printing and distribution of many forms that were delayed pending the approval of this legislation can now begin. These products include Form 1040, Form 1040A, Instructions 1040, and Instructions 1040A, as well as many others. We are working now to accomplish the quick delivery of tax products."

Rest assured that, as soon as we have them, you'll have them!

Counting America -- the 2010 census figures

The 2010 Census represented the most massive participation movement ever witnessed in our country. Approximately 74 percent of the households returned their census forms by mail; the remaining households were counted by census workers walking neighborhoods throughout the United States. The data collected by the Census Bureau are currently being processed and tabulated, with national and state population totals released by December 31, 2010.

The U.S. Census counts every resident in the United States. It is mandated by Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution and takes place every 10 years. The data collected by the decennial census determine the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives and is also used to distribute billions in federal funds to local communities.

WHEREAS, libraries are an essential part of the fabric of communities throughout the state and they link us to one another and to the ideas and events of yesterday, helping us prepare for tomorrow, and serving as a sanctuary in which we are free to read, write, and dream about events and ideas of the past, present and future; and

WHEREAS, libraries have become powerful equalizing forces in society where every visitor is welcome and knowledge is free to all regardless of personal wealth or position; and

WHEREAS, Friends of the Library groups energize libraries by enhancing their services and capabilities in communities across the Palmetto State; and

WHEREAS, Friends of the Library volunteers give their time and talents to sponsor recreational and educational programs for children and adults and organize book sales and other events to raise funds to meet special library needs.

Do you know how to spot a scam on the Internet? Do you know what social network sites your children or grandchildren are using, and how it can affect their future?

Don Cantrell of the SC Department of Education will give an overview of cyber communities and safey on the Internet. He provides a balanced look at how people are socializing and some of the positive and negative aspects of this growing culture. He will also talk about issues such as electronic identity theft, online advertisements, and cyber bullying.

Mr. Cantrell is the Director of the Office of Internal Technology at the SC Department of Education. During the past six years, he has traveled the state sharing information regarding Internet Safety and online information literacy through over 180 workshops, seminars, and keynotes.

Adults and teens are welcome to join us for this entertaining and informative program. Free and open to the public.

Library System receives Grandfamily grant

We were so pleased to learn earlier this week that the Abbeville County Library System has been awarded a grant to provide grandparenting information in our community.

"The strategic intent of the GrandFamily Resource Centers, created by the South Carolina State Library in partnership with public libraries in South Carolina, is to create one location in a community where resources for grandparents who are raising their grandchildren can be housed.

Each year, more and more grandparents from all geographic areas, socio-economic and ethnic groups are becoming primary caregivers for their grandchildren. As the children's parents struggle with substance abuse, mental illness, incarceration, economic hardship, divorce, domestic violence, and other challenges, grandparents are providing a vital safety net to children."

We're pleased to be a part of this important initiative!

"Friends" funds go to purchase materials for our libraries and to host programs for children, teens, and adults. Every penny helps us to provide better services!

2. Join the Friends as a volunteer.

Let us know at the library if you'd like to help us with booksales and other fundraisers.

3. Show your support.

If you believe that the library is a place that provides excellent services to all citizens of our county, please contact your County Council and state representatives. Let them know that, even in these tough times, continuing library funding at its current level is critical if we are to provide needed resources for the community.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news --- but it's mighty cold these days @ the Calhoun Falls Library. Our heater went out yesterday, and we've had to close the branch for the next few days while the problem is being dealt with. We're working with the town of Calhoun Falls to get us back open (and toasty warm) just as soon as possible. In the meantime, please come visit us at our branches in Abbeville or Donalds.

A comparison of more than 11 years of Public Library Survey data suggests that service changes in U.S. public libraries are having an impact on visitation and circulation, as record numbers of people now use public libraries nationwide. Several findings from the survey include:

*** The availability of Internet terminals in public libraries rose sharply between 2000 and 2007, increasing by 90 percent on a per capita basis. This dramatic increase is one example of the way U.S. public libraries are expanding their range of services to meet patron demand.
*** Between 1997 and 2007, per capita visits to public libraries increased nationwide by 19 percent. During the same period per capita circulation increased by 12 percent. This growth in demand for library services occurred even as people increasingly turned to the Internet to meet other information needs.
*** The study identified very different trajectories between urban and rural communities for select service trends, highlighting the importance of local context for identifying patron needs and improving services.

We drank coffee, we ate coffee beans, and yes, we painted with coffee grounds. It was 'all coffee, all the time' this past Monday night at the teen Espresso Self. You can tell everybody had some serious fun!
